A baptism of fire

 2008-07-29
The cross road at Randolph Road You know, standing your middle finger up means extremely rude and insult behavior. This is just my delusion, but I had considered that discreet adults, especially elderly people wouldn't do that. I actually had never received such an expression until then.

When I was driving my car and tried to turn right on the red signal. In America, we can turn right even the signal indicates red light, if no sign to prohibit turning right.

Yes, when I was about to turn right on the red signal from Randolph Road to Rockville Pike toward north, the oncoming car just came to the same lane turning left.
I don't think that was not so dangerous situation, but the driver who was an elderly lady seemed to feel discomfort my driving.

And then....

She gave me a greeting - standing her middle finger up.

Ohh..... it was the first time for me to have such a baptism.......
I'm so timid that I somehow felt down about that at that time.

But I don't care about it anymore!

Anyway that was my first experience to have a baptism by overseas style.

Rockville Pike towards Bethesda

Milk

 2008-07-10
American Milk is so big.

I was really surprised at the size, when I saw it at the first time.
Look at the picture. It has 1 gal. (1 gallon= about 3.8l) Comparing to Japanese regular sized milk (1000 ml), it is almost 3 times.

In Japan, we can buy small sized milk at the grocery stores. The smaller milk I said, is 500 ml or so. As far as I know, no small sized milk in the US which is like a Japanese smaller one.

My friend told me that she was looking for small sized milk as same as Japanese one, when she had just moved to the US. It was hard to find it, but she finally found small sized.

She bought it and then drank it.

However,,,, it was not a milk, but a whipping cream. yeah, whipping cream also bigger than Japanese one.

She thought " How thick American milk is!!!"

Unknown Plants

 2008-06-17
Have you ever heard that there are plants called "Poison Ivy" or "Poison Oak"? When I heard about Poison Oak, it suddenly came upon me that there was a monster in the RPG like this picture.

↓here's my image of Poison Oak at that time.

As far as I know, these plants have a chemical called "urushiol" in the sap. Once you touch it, it will be absorbed into your skin and cause terrible rashes. Too bad, urushiol is hard to be absorbed into the water, so we should throw away the cloth stained with urushiol. If you want to know it, you should google it, and you'll find many horrible articles and pictures......

By the way,

I've been bitten by gnats in the US. My both calves were swelled up impossibly with a heavy itchesitch. When I tried to cure it, I remembered that I was given some sample drugs from the pharmacy during stayed in Japan. If I remember right, the ointment to cure itching should have been included there.

I found it!

But... the ointment was not for itches an itch, but hemorrhoid. orz...

orz......

My surprising things in USA

 2008-05-16
I was very surprised at huge size of the Cup when I saw it for the first time.
I think you might imagine something championship cup, but it's not the cup.

The cup, I'm just going to mention, is about "Lingerie." I had never seen such kind of the lingerie which had extremely huge cups in my life. It seemed to be so huge as to wear as a hat and it looked like a "Donburi"- a big bowl, we call it "Donburi" in Japanese. The lingerie shop at the department was just as a big bowl shop for me. Anyway, huge! I was overwhelmed by the giant cups of American size bras.

Oh, Do you want to try it?

Next my surprising thing is here.

Hostess_twinkies.jpg

Oh, how appetizing sponge cakes they look! Do you know about these cakes? The name of these cakes is "Twinkie". Have you ever tried it? I'm afraid not yet. I was very surprised when I knew the calories it had. How much calories does it have per each do you think?

Each Twinkie has about 145 kilo calories.

However, there are many high calorie snacks in Japan, too, so it's not so surprising thing, but I found the article refers to "Fried Twinkie" on wikipedia. I don't think necessary to fry it which has already baked up with a vanilla cream, moreover. I was surprised at the way to eat.

About Twinkie
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twinkie

Japanese Hibachi is NOT Hibachi in the US

 2008-04-14
When we heard of "HIBACHI", we would imagine a device like these pictures.

Yes, In Japan, Hibachi is known to us as a kind of heating device using charcoals.
I would see lots of advertisements written "HIBACHI" in the US., but what I saw in the US was quite different from usual Japanese Hibachi.

What Hibachi do you imagine?

Talking of Hibachi in the US, it is known as a portable cooking apparatus or cooking style using a gas-heated hot plate at the steak house.  The chef affords us good entertainment with juggling act. The style is almost as same as we just call it "Teppan yaki" in Japan.

I've ever tried Hibachi grill at steak house in the US. That was pretty good!

Oh, America has also FUTON, but it is not Futon which we usually imagine.
They refer to the furniture as FUTON which can be used not only as a couch but also as a bed.

I was surprised to know the difference between America and Japan.
