V-J Day

¡¡2008-08-16
While I was net surfing, I found a ghost story related to WW2. Oh,, you would think that I never learn, wouldn't you?

Talking of WW2, yesterday (Aug. 15th) was the anniversary of the end of the war. In the US, they call the day "V-J Day". (Victory over Japan Day, North American date is Aug. 14th) In China and Korea, they call the day as "Independence Day."

TIME.jpgFrom the ghost story in the internet column.

A Japanese priest visited Southeast Asia to pray for the people who were killed in WW2. One night, he heard footsteps by many people on the corridor, and then many people came into his room.

It was Japanese troops, of course they had already died. They solicited him chanting a prayer to the Buddha and they can return to Japan. A priest did it for them and saw they were purified. They seemed to be able to back to Japan.

Afterwards, an another visitor came to his room. It was an American soldier. He asked a priest to do same thing. After giving a prayer, an American soldier was purified, although the style was by Buddhism. It has a difference of religion, but a heart to mourn for the dead can be communicated. I believe the American soldier also could back to his country.

Regrettably, many of young Japanese are getting to unconcerned with WW2 nowadays. Some of them don't know even atomic bombs were dropped into Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I feel it's a very sad thing. Knowing it and handing down the story from generation to generation, is necessary for us as a Japanese, in order not to repeat a tragedy. Remember all people who were killed in the war, and pray for the souls of them.

May peace prevail on the Earth.

Hello.
I am glad to know that a young person like you picked up this serious topic. Coincidentally, August 15 is the anniversary of the end of WW¶and the Bon Festival. We have to remember many people died meaninglessly during that war. By chance, I watched the TV program about ¥ì¥¤¥ÆÀï on that day. A hundred thousand people died on Leyte Island. Some people who suffered hell on earth are still alive and have turned more than 80 years old. It is important to tell the awful tragedy to young generation not to cause a war again.

Hi ruruan-san,

Thank you for your comment. I also watched the same program about the battle of Leyte Island on TV and shocked at the story. This picture-"TIME V-J Day" I up loaded, is brought from the US when I came back to Japan, to know the point of view from America.

While I lived in the US, I saw many things related to WW2- at the museum, from TV program and so on, and they brought me a necessity to know our history much more. If I didn't live in the US, I would be one of the person who is unconcerned with that war, so I appreciate I could live in America.

I'm also glad to have an opportunity to talk about that war with you.

I've never liked the name "Victory over Japan Day". In my opinion, the word "victory" should never be used in talking about war, because no one wins in a war -- we all lose when people decide to kill other people. I like the official Japanese name for the day, ÀïÝǼԤòÄÉÅ餷ʿϤòµ§Ç°¤¹¤ëÆü, better, since it's a reminder that many people died during the war, and that we need to pray for peace so that such tragedies won't keep happening. Even the older and shorter version of the name, ½ªÀﵭǰÆü, reminds us that the only good thing in a war is when the killing stops. Of course, it would be even better if wars were never started in the first place.

I really hope that peace will prevail in the world soon. Never fighting wars again would be the greatest victory of all.

Hi Michael,

I appreciate you gave me a valuable opinion. To tell the truth, it's my first time to talk about war with American. The TV program about The Battle of Leyte Island I watched recently, told me that many American soldiers have been still suffering from that war. people- inhabitants on the island, survived Japanese soldier, many people have been still suffered. As you say, we all lose when we decided to kill other people. So I think it worse thing being indifferent.

I really appreciate to have a chance to talk with you about war.
Thank you.

I try to write about memories of life in the U.S to practice English. Maybe you will find many mistakes on it, so please correct them!
