I've ever bought a cold medicine named Sudafed at the pharmacy, when I had a bad dry cough.But it didn't work. Indeed, it brought me some heavy side effects; palpitation, short breathless, insomnia......
It seemed to be too strong for me. I guess that these OTC(Over the counter medicine) sometimes work strongly for the people who are not so tall like me.

The medicine I took at that time used to contain pseudoephedrine. It sometimes causes narcotic effects, so it has been switched to another one named Sudafed PE using phenylephrine in the US nowadays. The article I read said that these medicines containing pseudoephedrine need ID to buy in the US.
ahh.... I thought I was going to die at that time. I guess it may have been not a cold but a mycoplasma pneumonia from the beginning.....
激しい空咳に悩まされた時に、Sudafedという薬を買いました。その当時のSudafedには、スードエフェドリンという、しばしば麻薬性の副作用を伴う成分が含まれていました。それを用法に従って飲んでみたら、動悸、息切れ、不眠などの副作用が強く現れました。ああ、あの時はもう死ぬかと思った。。。。 アメリカのOTCは我々にとってはちょっと強いのかもしれない。
スードエフェドリン（ああ、だからスダフェドなのか...。）はしばしば覚醒剤の原料として使われるため、現在はSudafed PEというフェニレフェリンという成分のものに変わったみたいです。アメリカでスードエフェドリン入りの風邪薬を買うにはIDが必要になると記事にありました。
そもそも風邪ではなくマイコプラズマ肺炎だったのかな〜？調べた訳ではないので分からないけど。。

マイコプラズマ肺炎の主症状は長引く乾いた咳、熱などです。アメリカではwalking pneumonia と呼ばれ、入院する必要がなく、歩いて受診に来られるからその名がついたとか。日本ではオリンピックが開催される年にそれが流行したことから、オリンピック肺炎と呼ばれることもあります。今ではそのような周期性ではなくなってきているので、その呼び名は当てはまらなくなってきているようです。
私の場合、2002年と2006年に謎の空咳に悩まされたので、もし、2010年にそれに感染してしまったらワールドカップ肺炎と呼ぶかも。
とにかく、体の異変に気がついたら速やかに病院へ行くことをお勧めします。
