PhiladelphiaOur next stop is Philadelphia. Philadelphia is the fifth largest city in America and here is important place to know about American history. Here is the exact place where the Declaration of Independence was signed.
The left is Independence hall where the US Constitution was written and approved in 1787. The right is the Liberty Bell. It is a symbol of freedom for American.
次はフィラデルフィアに寄ります。フィラデルフィアはアメリカで５番目に大きな都市。そしてここは、アメリカの歴史を知る上で重要な所だ。まさにこの地で独立宣言がなされた。
左は合衆国憲法の草案が作られ、是認されたインディペンデンスホール。右はリバティ・ベル。アメリカ人にとって自由の象徴だ。

It's a very famous scene of "Rocky" by Sylvester Stallone. Yes! Philadelphia is where the movie Rocky took place. Taking of Philadelphia Museum, many people would imagine this training scene. Actually, here has a footprint of Rocky. I saw many people do strike a victory pose like Rocky. Of course, I did it,too! I felt as if I could get over everything!!
フィラデルフィア美術館といえば、この映画、Rockyのトレーニングシーンで有名。美術館前にはRockyの足形がある。 多くの人達がここでRockyのようにガッツポーズをしていた。無論、私もやってきた。何だか全ての事を乗り越えられそうな気がした。

Oh, talking of Rocky, it brings me an old memory when I took part in the marathon competition in my elementary school days.
"It will help you enhance your stamina!"
my mother brought some raw eggs and piece of baked garlics to me. You know, Rocky drank some raw eggs before training in the movie, I guessed she must have seen that scene. However, drinking raw eggs was not so comfortable for me. That slimy feeling of eggs going through my throat was replayed again and again in my mind, and what's more, my bad smelled breath by garlics bothered me during running. It just made me feel sick, only to get the worst record in my life, instead of stamina.
Anyhow, I don't recommend you to do it before working out.

映画、Rockyは昔々、私がマラソン大会に参加した時の思い出をもたらせる。
「これ、スタミナつくよ！」
と、母がいくつかの生タマゴと焼きニンニク片を持って来た。あぁ、Rockyのあのシーンを見たに違いない。しかしながら、生タマゴを飲むのはそんなに気持ちの良いもんではない。どろっとした生タマゴの感触が何度も脳内再生される。そして更に、かなり臭いニンニク臭がする自分の呼気が私を苦しめる。
スタミナどころか人生最悪の記録を取ったことは言うまでもない。

As I told you in the previous article, Amish don't use any machines and vehicles, and I've heard that they don't use even insecticide for farming. So I guess farm products by them is very fresh and safe. Maryland has Amish markets,too. I would often go there to buy fresh vegetables and meats. There was opened only from Thursday to Saturday. 前述の通り、アーミッシュの人々は機械や車を使わない。また、農業に殺虫剤さえ使わないと聞いた事がある。なので、アーミッシュの人々による農産物は新鮮で安全なんだろうと思う。メリーランドにもアーミッシュマーケットがあって（木曜から土曜しか開いていない。）新鮮な野菜や肉をよく買いに行ったなぁ。
We can see many shops by Amish in Lancaster. Handmaid wooden products- wooden calendar, dolls, toys, were warmhearted. Of all others, quilt products was wonderful, as Karin-san said in the previous comment. I bought a pair of quilt cushions. I really love it.
いろんなアーミッシュのお店が建ち並ぶ。手作りの木製のカレンダーや人形やおもちゃなど、温かい感じがした。中でも、Karinさんがコメントで下さったように、キルト製品がすばらしい。
お土産にキルトのクッションを買ってきました。
Do you remember the shooting incident at the Amish school in Lancaster in 2006? 5 Amish girls were shot to death. That was really sad news. One of the victims who was the oldest girl, told the suspect to shot her first to protect others, although she was a still young girl. Who can do this in the fearful situation? In addition, The Amish people forgave the suspect. It made me consider what our minds should be like and how holy and noble people they were.

Today, I'll take you to Pennsylvania. First, we'll visit Lancaster. Lancaster is famous as a large Amish Country in the US. 大きな地図で見る
Have you heard about "Amish"? Amish is also called "Pennsylvania Dutch", they are descended from German who settled in there in 17th and 18th century. They basically take subsistence farming and they don't use vehicles such kind of cars. Therefore they usually ride a buggy for transport like this. America has a lot of interesting places.
今日はペンシルバニア州、ランカスターへお連れしましょう。ランカスターはアメリカの中でもアーミッシュの大きなコミュニティーがある事で有名。
アーミッシュはペンシルバニア・ダッチとも呼ばれ、１７〜１８世紀にドイツからの移民に由来している。主に自給自足で生活をしており、車などの乗り物は使用しない。それ故、普段の交通手段は、このようにバギーと呼ばれる軽装馬車。アメリカにはたくさんのおもしろい場所があるんだなぁ。

TransferAfter going through the Custom, just did check in, and I would be all right.
On the way to the check in counter, I saw people waiting to get their suitcase checked up by X-ray. This is what we have to do before check in. When I saw it I thought all passengers must be done it.
But it was an unnecessary check for me, because I had already done it at Narita airport.
Stupidly, I did it again. I had no doubt, rather, I thought I should have cooperated to maintain safety for America. Too bad....... it was a quite long line of people, plus, officer's job was as slow as a snail.
Hurry up..... Hurry up.... Hurry up!! I shouted so in my mind.
When I finished the unnecessary security check the airplane to Washington DC had already left!
Waaaaahhhhh----!!!! I didn't know what to do. I was too shocked to do anything for a while. My situation was exactly like this picture.
I can't hear.( I can't catch English.)I can't speak.( I can't speak English.)
I can't see. ( I can't read English.)
税関を通ったらあとはチェックインのみ。そうすりゃ万事うまくいったのに。
チェックインカウンターへ向かう途中、人々がスーツケースをX線チェックをしてもらうために待っているのを見た。チェックイン前にするあれです。 それを見て、「あぁ、アメリカでは全ての人はあれをされなくてはいけないのか。」と思った。だがしかし、私にはそれは必要ない。だって、成田でもう既にやったのだから。
疑うどころか、寧ろ、「ここはひとつ、アメリカの平和維持に協力しようじゃないか。」と変な義務感満載。あほなことに、不必要なセキュリティチェックのために自ら長蛇の列に並んだ。これがまた、係員の動作が遅いったら...。 早く... 早く... 早よせえ!!!と心の中で叫んでいた。
いらんセキュリティチェックを終えた頃には、ワシントンDC行きの飛行機はもう既に行ってしまっていた。
わああぁぁ！どうすりゃいいんだ？！この時の私の状況はこの3猿に集約される。（英語が）聞きとれない、話せない、読めない。しばらくショックで動けなかった。
"Why don't you ask the check in counter?", Did you think so? If I had an enough English proficiency, I could do it soon, but all I could do was just standing and hovering around. I felt regret not going back with my husband. After a while, I dared to try asking the check in counter with short English words. "I..... missed...... the airplane..." It was only short wards, but it was very difficult for me. I couldn't catch what the staff was saying, but I was given a new ticket to Washington DC. After all, I could get to Washington DC quite late.
When I saw the beautiful scenery surrounded by forrest of Washington DC from airplane, it gave unspeakable relief to my heart and it reminded me about the last scene of one movie that survived soldiers in the cosmic space war, coming back to old dear Earth.

チェックインカウンターで聞いてみたら？ と思ったでしょう？十分な英語力があったらすぐにそれができたんでしょうね...。しかし、できることといったら放心状態で立ちつくす事とそこらをウロウロすることだった。こんなことだったら旦那と一緒に帰ってくればよかった。。 しばらく経ってラチが開かないことに気づいた。よし、思い切ってカウンターに尋ねてみよう。無い知識を総動員し、ようやく出た言葉は、「アイ ミスド ざ えあプレイン。」たったこれだけだが私には大変なことだった。 で、何言ってんだか分からなかったけど、新しいDC行きのチケットをくれた。結局、かなり遅れてワシントンDCに着く事ができた。
森に囲まれた美しいワシントンの景色が見えた時、言いようもない安堵感を感じた。と同時に宇宙空間での戦争を生き抜いた兵士達が、懐かしい地球へと帰って行くというとある映画のラストシーンを思い出させた。あぁ、やっと帰れたんだ...。
おしまい。
引っ張った割にはごちゃごちゃしてしまいました。すみません。まぁ要は、余計な事をことするな。乗り遅れてもあわてるなということです。

How to transfer in the U.S. from other country1. Go through the immigration formalities.
2. Pick up your baggage.
3. Go through the Custom
4. Check in at the check in counter.
5. Go to the departure gate.
アメリカでの飛行機の乗り継ぎかた。
1. 入国審査を受ける → 2. 荷物をピックアップする → 3. 税関を通る → 4. チェックイン手続きをする → 5.出発ゲートへGo
At first sight, it seems easy, but moving around in an unaccustomed place takes time than you expected, and if you didn't have enough time to transfer, it would make you more flurried. O'Hare International Airport is very large. I've heard that this airport is one of busy airports in the U.S. Indeed, there was a long line of people at the immigration counter. I did the process in the above, to No.3, so just do check in.
Now! let's go to the check in counter.

一見して簡単そうだが、慣れない場所で移動するということは思いのほか時間が掛かる。乗り継ぎに十分な時間がないと更に焦ります。シカゴ・オヘア空港はアメリカで多忙な空港の１つだと聞いたことがある。確かに、入国審査カウンターには長蛇の列ができていた。さて、上のプロセス３番までやったぞ。あとはチェックインするだけだ。
